Ortofon has been on the forefront of audio technology for over a century. It all started in 1918 when two Danish engineers Axel Petersen and Arnold Poulsen founded the Electrical Phono Film company whose aim was to develop a method for high quality audio recordings that could be synchronised with film systems.
Then in 1948 Ortofon developed their first phono cartridge utilising the moving coil design; this was also the first ever moving coil cartridge in the world. Since then Ortofon has developed more than 300 different phono cartridges across a wide range of prices and use cases.
Ortofon styli are still developed, designed and manufactured in Denmark to this day with the Ortofon manufacturing facility in Nakskov in south Denmark using a combination of advanced machinery alongside skilled operators to allow for their human craftsmanship to be delivered with uniform industrial quality.
And in a coincidental event Ortofon’s new Technology & Acoustic Center opened in October 2020 is based in the South-West of Zealand so you can enjoy technology from Old Zealand right here in New Zealand (note technically not the origin of the name New Zealand but you can ignore that, this is an audio blog not a geography and history one).
We stock both Ortofon's line of HiFi styli for home listening as well as their Ortofon DJ line of styli across a range of price points. Orotofon’s home hifi styli are split into the OM range and 2M range, note the OM range styli are all physically interchangeable allowing for easy upgrades. However not all 2M styli are interchangeable, the 2M Red and Blue are interchangeable with each other but not with the 2M Bronze and 2M Black which are interchangeable with each other.
