Collection: Early 20th Century

Classical is an umbrella term referring to all Western art music. There are a number of periods leading up to the 20th Century: Ancient, Early, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic. The first half of the 20th century brought about a number of new movements including the Impressionism of Debussy and the Expressionism of Webern which are distinct from the Romantic period that preceded it. Some of the new techniques (including atonality, dissonance, serialism, and an emphasis on texture) went against traditional theory and musical norms, opening the door for generations of experimentation in music.
