Although Mr. Hart and co dabbled in a few specialised releases in the mid 1980’s, in 2012 we came back to the game with some limited edition releases of essential Kiwi tunes for Record Store Day.

Toy Love - Live at the Gluepot 2xLP
RGLP001 / 2012

Toy Love need no introduction, so if you’re not familiar, you will need to ask your cool Uncle who plays the bass (or just Google I guess). Live at the Gluepot is a recording of one of the band’s final shows, literally recorded to tape from the sound desk, which took place on 12th September, 1980. This record acts as something of a retrospective as the band rips through 29 tracks from their own catalog as well as some hits by the precursor band The Enemy. Live at the Gluepot also does what none of the Toy Love studio recordings managed to do; accurately capture the band’s frenetic live energy. These guys played approximately 10 shows an hour through 1979 and 1980 and anyone who managed to see them will tell you that the stage is where Toy Love shined. Once you’ve heard them in their natural habitat, it starts to make sense why people are still talking about this band almost 40 years later (despite being together for less than two years originally) and why this album sold out completely by lunchtime on RSD 2012.

Scavengers - Self Titled LP
RGLP003 / 2014

The Scavengers were one of the first punk bands in Auckland, forming 1976 they were originally influenced by 1960’s American garage bands and British R&B, but by ‘77 they had morphed into a more vicious punk rock animal. In ‘79 they moved to Melbourne and became “The Marching Girls”. They never released any material during their initial run as the Scavengers, supposedly due to original singer leaving mid-way through a record deal (although this situation did give us the classic Scavengers scorcher “Mysterex”), however a posthumous release was compiled in 2003 and then a slightly different version of this was released for the AK79 reunion show in 2008. This LP is comprised of prime cuts from those early recordings, as well as some early recordings of the group as The Marching Girls.

La De Da’s - Self Titled LP
RGLP004 / 2014

Describing a band as “the Small Faces of Te Atatu” might be a bad start, but the La De Da’s were THE Mod band of New Zealand in the mid 60’s. Not only were these guys influenced by the UK Mod scene but also by the American Soul that was heavily imported at the time. What makes the La De Da’s legendary though is not that they were local band doing what was big in the international charts, but because they had their own sound within and to some extent in spite of what was popular. This is a band that was truly world class in their day, largely due to the vocal and guitar performances of Phil Key and Kevin Borich, respectively. Despite those signature aspects, it must be pointed out that the rhythm section were no slouches either, this was an efficient unit that rocked the ever-loving shit out of this country (and that one over the Tasman as well) from top to bottom.

Side A

1. How Is The Air Up There
2. Don’t You Stand In My Way
3. I Take What I Want
4. Hey Girl
5. Bright Lights Big City

Spelling Mistakes - Feels So Good LP
RGLP005 / 2014

Like all good punk bands formed before 1980, The Spelling Mistakes were equally loved and reviled. One of the second wave of punk bands in NZ, formed under the influence of the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls and locals The Scavengers. Having slightly more technical proficiency than some of their peers, The Spelling Mistakes penned songs with certain pop sensibilities run through a filter of 77 attitude. These guys were banned from performing at several venues after their fans wrecked everything. They had their fair share of controversies too, the most entertaining of which surrounded their 1980 single “(The Ballad of) Reena’s Piss Flaps” which was a song about appreciating… the female form, I guess we’ll say. Further, “Reena” is actually a reference to actress Rena Owen (as in, BETH, from you know, ONCE WERE WARRIORS), who was involved in the punk scene at the time. Don’t stress out, Rena gave them permission. This LP is a kind of greatest hits for the band, collecting several recordings together for the first time, several of which are seeing their vinyl debut. Some demos are included as well as a live track.

Bitch/Cleves - Bitch/Cleves LP

RGLP007 / 2015

The Clevedonaires started as three siblings in the rural farming community of Clevedon. With a musical upbringing, the Brown family kids were naturals and before long Ron (Guitar) and Graham (Drums) soon convinced thier then 10 year old sister Gaye to ditch the piano playing and pick up a bass. By the mid 60’s the group had gained a formidable reputation in the Auckland scene. Due to narrowly missing an opportunity to travel to Vietnam to perform for ANZAC troops, the band instead headed to Australia and after a lineup change renamed themselves The Cleves. After metamorphosing from pop to a more progressive psych sound, the Cleves became one of Sydney’s hottest bands and dropped their positively ripping self titled album in 1971 to critical acclaim. The next move saw The Cleves relocate to London, and undergo another change of moniker; this time becoming Bitch, a name that more appropriately encompassed their increasingly heavy sound. After the band risked it all and threw their last few dollars into hiring a venue (and “the biggest PA” they could find) to perform a showcase for label execs. Before they’d even finished that set, they’d received a lucrative offer. This resulted in a recording session at Apple Studios where they completed the record in 1973. The tragedy here is that due to some management re-shuffling, the label never actually put the record out. A little over 40 years later we decided to right this wrong by releasing the Bitch record packaged together with the Cleves S/T album in a 2xLP set!

Larry’s Rebels - A Study in Colour
RGLP008 / 2015

Larry’s Rebels were very much New Zealand’s answer to the Animals. An extremely popular hit making machine during the mid 60’s, releasing a slew of popular singles and one legendary album “A Study in Black” in 1967. Known for both their originals and their carefully selected, expertly executed covers. “A Study in Colour” offers a look at the group’s slightly rougher R’N’B roots on side one, and the more psych orientated material on side two. Remastered from original master tapes and collected onto LP together for the first time.

Darcy Clay - Jesus I Was Evil 12”
RGLP009 / 2015

We know you know this song, this raw-dog four track fuzzed out bedroom recording that seems to perfectly encompass the feral spirit of rock and roll. Even if this song hadn’t blown up in 1997, it would surely be revered by rock aficionados across New Zealand and perhaps beyond. The fact is though, this track did blow up somehow (just try getting your home-made garage rock recordings on mainstream radio in 2017), and has now taken its place as a surrogate national anthem. Although DC tragically took his own life in 1998, his legacy lives on in the universal acknowledgement of his genius. A great musician, and by all accounts an excellent dude. 2015 saw the re-release of his seminal 1997 release for the first time on vinyl.

Side A

1. Jesus I Was Evil
2. What About It
3. Jolene

Side B

1. All I Gotta Do
2. And it Was Easy
